NATIONAL ADOPTION AWARENESS WEEK
Federal Labor welcomes National Adoption Awareness Week, founded by Deborra-lee Furness and running 8-14 November 2015.
Senator Claire Moore, Shadow Minister for Communities and Graham Perrett MP, Shadow Parliamentary Secretary to the Shadow Attorney-General attended the parliamentary launch for the National Adoption Awareness Week 2015 today.
Labor has a strong record on adoption which includes improving the safety, accountability and efficiency of the process of inter-country adoption.
Labor also established in 2008 Australia's first National Peak Overseas Adoption Support Group which was committed to reducing the bureaucratic barriers to intercountry adoption, while always ensuring the interests of the child are put first.
Overseas adoption programs are important for both Australia and the adoption country. It is also important for government to constantly monitor overseas adoption programs. Australia's Hong Kong and Taiwan overseas adoption programs were expanded in 2009 under a Labor Government.
Labor welcomes the announcement of the expansion of the overseas adoption program to include Poland and Latvia. Programs such as these offer an opportunity for Australia to accept more children who are in need of families, whilst ensuring that appropriate safeguards are in place to prevent trafficking.
It is important to note that there is a great deal of evidence that can be learned from adoption practices that have occurred in Australia that must not be forgotten including children's rights to transparency of knowledge of their identity.
